Two of the biggest culprits when it comes to the negative environmental impact in the travel industry are aeroplanes and cruise ships.
According to the David Suzuki Foundation, the aviation industry “accounts for four to nine per-cent of the total climate change impact of human activity”.
Air travel contributes approximately 2 percent of the world’s greenhouse emissions.
When you consider jet-fuelled carbon emissions and unsustainable consumption practices onboard, it isn’t hard to see why.

2. @alisonsadventures – top plastic free travel tips
Alison’s top tips include:
- Refuse plastic straws, stirrers and polystyrene cups.
- Bring your own reusable coffee or tea mug
- Bring your own reusable glass or steel water bottle.
- Bring your own reusable wood or steel lunch box.
- Contribute to carbon offset programs to neutralise your carbon footprint when you travel!
3. @seedandsprout – Byron Bay, Australia

The Clean Coast Collective is a Byron Bay-based not-for-profit fighting the war against plastic waste. Nat & Dan started the not-for-profit to raise awareness and inspire action to solve and prevent the ocean plastic crisis. While the focus is on prevention through the sale of a lifestyle range of single-use plastic reusable alternatives, there is still “5 trillion tonnes of plastic” still floating in the ocean. In an effort to educate and solve the plastic waste problem, the Clean Coast Collective embark on an annual trash tribe expedition with a group of volunteers to clean one of Australia’s most remote beaches, Chilli Beach, located on the Cape York Peninsula.

5. Earth Bottles
Earth bottles teamed up with Laura Wells – who is an environmentalist, presenter and one of Australia’s top plus-size models here are her plastic free tips:
- Plastic bags: opt for cloth reusable bags
- Plastic single-use water bottles: get a reusable stainless bottle instead.
- Plastic cutlery: take a set of cutlery with you in your bag.
- Plastic straws: straws suck, just ask for ‘no straw please’ or get yourself a stainless steel one!
- Disposable coffee cups (the internal is lined with plastic and the lid is made from plastic).
- Microfibres from our synthetic clothes enter the ocean when we wash them.
- Go tea-bag less.
- Contact your favourite companies and ask them to ship or pack their items without plastic.
