Canggu in Bali and Kuta in Lombok are on neighbouring islands, about 40 minutes apart by air, and both are good places to learn and improve. They feel very different. Canggu is busy, social and easy to reach. Kuta Lombok is quieter, more spread out and built around boat trips to reef breaks in sheltered bays. Neither is better. This comparison is here to help you work out which one suits you.
| Canggu, Bali | Kuta, Lombok | |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner waves | Batu Bolong and Old Man’s: slow, rolling waves a short walk from town | Selong Belanak (sandy beach break), Tanjung Aan and Gerupuk Inside |
| How you reach the surf | On foot or a short ride | By scooter or car to the beaches; by local boat to the Gerupuk and Tanjung Aan reefs |
| Next-level waves | Echo Beach, Pererenan, River Mouth, Berawa | Gerupuk Outside, Are Guling, Mawi |
| Crowds | Busy, especially July, August and over Christmas and New Year | Generally quieter, though Gerupuk Inside can get very crowded |
| Main season | April to October, biggest June to August | May to September |
| Wet season | November to March: smaller, more variable, onshore winds common | November to March: smaller, mellower, fewer surfers |
| Water | Roughly 25–30 °C. No wetsuit | Roughly 25–30 °C. No wetsuit |
| Airport | Denpasar (DPS), 45 minutes to an hour by road | Lombok International, 20 to 30 minutes by road |
| Out of the water | Cafés, restaurants, nightlife, Tanah Lot temple, rice paddies | Bukit Merese viewpoint, empty beaches, Sasak villages |
Canggu packs a lot into a short stretch of coast. Batu Bolong and Old Man’s are forgiving waves where surf schools teach, and more demanding reef breaks sit a few minutes either side. The convenience is hard to beat: you can walk to the surf, and walk to breakfast afterwards.
Kuta Lombok spreads its waves over a longer coastline of bays. Selong Belanak has a sand bottom, which is the gentlest surface to learn on. Gerupuk Bay holds several reef breaks reached by boat, where the bay itself gives shelter. Getting to the surf takes more effort, and the reward is usually more space.

Both places can be surfed in every month, and both share the same broad pattern: a dry season with bigger, more consistent swell in the middle of the year, and a wet season with smaller waves from November to March. In the wet season the wind at Canggu often blows onshore, so early starts and calm windows matter. Lombok’s wet season is known for mellower waves and thinner crowds. In both places rain tends to arrive in bursts and does not usually last all day.
Canggu is lively. There is always somewhere new to eat, people to meet and something on in the evening. Kuta Lombok is a smaller town with a slower rhythm, where days are organised around the tide and evenings are quieter. If you want a social base with everything on the doorstep, that points to Canggu. If you want to feel further away from it all, that points to Lombok.
The two are easy to combine. Flights between Bali and Lombok take about 40 minutes, fast boats take from about an hour and a half, and the public ferry from Padang Bai to Lembar takes four to six hours.
Is Canggu or Lombok better for beginners?
Both have good beginner waves. Canggu’s are closer to town. Lombok’s Selong Belanak has a sand bottom, and the line-ups are generally quieter.
Which is less crowded?
Lombok, generally. The exception is Gerupuk Inside, which can get very busy.
How do I get between them?
By air in about 40 minutes, by fast boat from about an hour and a half, or by public ferry in four to six hours.
