Learning to surf in Canggu
Canggu is a good place to learn, at the right breaks. The waves around our surf camp in Canggu vary from soft, rolling, beginner and longboard friendly waves to fast, punchy reef breaks. Beginners usually start at Batu Bolong or Old Man’s, side by side near the camp, where slow, rolling waves give long, forgiving rides when the swell is small. Both are busy, so learning how to share a line-up safely is part of the lesson.
Our surf school is mobile, so our instructors pick the best spot for learning on the day, depending on conditions. If conditions are bad or the line-up is crowded, the local Mojosurf guides take you on a road trip to another Bali beach break with better conditions that day.
You can surf Canggu in any month. The dry season, April to October, has the most consistent swell, with the biggest waves from June to August, when beginners do best on the smaller days and with a guide. The wet season, November to March, has smaller, more variable surf that often suits learners. See the best time to surf in Bali for a month-by-month guide.
