COVID-19 Contingency Plan
How will Mojosurf act in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic?
Mojosurf was born and continues changing people’s lives 21 years on. The team was built with equally passionate people from Australia and the world over, drawn not by financial reward or promise but through the enthusiasm and commitment to people and the ultimate surf lifestyle on the planet. We invite you to safely come experience Mojosurf with us.
We are currently facing the challenge of our lives since the Covid-19 pandemic decisively impacted the way we did business.
One thing is certain, though. The waves continue to roll every day, and the campervan dream life remains alive. Our staff remains active and eager to welcome you, our campervans ready to hit the road and accommodations clean and safe to welcome you.
What are the measures implemented in Portugal?
“During the outbreak of pneumonia by the new Coronavirus – COVID-19 the Portuguese government has been taking all necessary public health measures to protect the entire population. The analysis of the evolution of the outbreak is constant and implementation of new measures will be carried out whenever necessary.
General behaviour guidelines were enacted, in which all people must adopt a social distance (2 meters) and the use of face masks is mandatory in public transport and services, shops and supermarkets, in closed spaces or in places with many people. In Madeira, the use of a mask is mandatory in all public places, closed or open.
In order to prevent the spread of the virus and the possibility of contagion, all services should take hygiene and sanitisation measures according to the indications of the Directorate-General for Health, with specific recommendations for various sectors of activity. In tourism, the “Clean & Safe” seal, defined by Turismo de Portugal, was implemented, which allows tourists to have greater security and confidence in the use of accommodation establishments, in the various tourist services and tourist attractions.
In the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores, both regional governments have enacted some specific measures.” – Detailed information at https://www.visitportugal.com/en/node/421175

Our guests and workers’ Health and Safety come first!
We’ve made several important decisions to safeguard the health and minimise contamination risks for all our customers and friends wishing to visit us who, at the same time, naturally, want to make sure they will be kept safe. Trust is only gained with a real and credible notion of security.
All our partners have adhered to the Clean & Safe certification, under the supervision of Turismo de Portugal [Portugal’s Tourism Board], thus following the strict specifications it requires.
Our staff will be properly prepared and informed to receive our guests according to the new reality we face. The Mojosurf Portugal staff has received specific training to bring them up to date on the best practices according to the official information outlined by the Portuguese Directorate-General of Health.
We regret that, sometimes, all the preventive and sanitary measures can cause some inconvenience and delays in the operation of the various activities available at Mojosurf. However, it’s important to point out that all these changes are legally mandatory in Portugal, in the end serving to mitigate any possible contamination.
Below we list the various changes that Mojosurf has implemented, in its various areas of operation and in its different spaces, to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic.
What kind of accommodation is available?
In all our adventures several accommodations options are available: Indie Campers’ Campervan, Selina’s Hostels and Secret Mojo Farm. In all the options offered, our partners have adhered to the Clean & Safe certification, under the supervision of Turismo de Portugal [Portugal’s Tourism Board], thus following the strict specifications it requires.
“The health, safety and happiness of our guests, team, partners and neighbors is Selina’s highest priority. As the situation with COVID-19 rapidly evolves, we are continuing to follow the best advice and guidelines of global health officials and putting robust precautionary measures in place at Selina locations.” – Learn more at Selina Corona Virus Statement Health & Safety
“We’re taking extra measures to help contain the COVID-19 virus. We have implemented safety policies that aim to protect our employees (especially those at our operational locations) as well as our customers. We are limiting services to the bare minimum, implementing antibacterial hand sanitizers across all our offices, and physical contact between staff and customers is limited to a minimum of 2 metres of distancing.” – Learn more at Travelling with Indie Campers during the COVID-19 outbreak
“We’re a typical Portuguese farmhouse that aims to provide a giant and safe adventure. Looking after your safety is our priority and that is why our staff has been trained and we’re taking extra measures by following the advice and regulations of global and national health officials.” – Secret Mojo Farm
How will our customers be transported?
Our Mojosurf transport van will obey the rule of transporting only 2/3 of the passengers in relation to the vehicle’s maximum capacity, the front seats being reserved only for the driver. Inside the vehicle, the use of a mask is mandatory. In our case, since we use 9-seater vans, we can carry 4 passengers plus the driver. After transporting a group in our vans, we proceed with its disinfection.
When driving your own Indie Campers’ Campervan, you can be assured that everything will be cleaned and disinfected. It will, however, be your responsibility to wash your hands, to make sure you’re travelling with people you trust and to make sure some social distance is kept.
How will you organise your surfing lessons?
All our surf schools partners comply with the Portuguese Surf Federation protection rules for COVID-19. What changes will there be in surfing lessons?
- Classes can have a maximum of five students per instructor and maintain a minimum distance of 4 meters between students and teachers;
- Promotion of the use of own material or if it is not possible to deliver the sanitized and disinfected material (boards, leash, suit and lycra) and guarantee a period of 72 hours before the next use;
- Training on compliance with basic precautions for infection prevention and control;
- Training cannot include physical contact between participants and between participants and coach;
- The warm-up must be carried out with a distance of 4 meters from other students and coach;
- There is a rescue protocol in case it is necessary to help a student in difficulties.
- Friday to Sunday Daily Activities
Below is an example itinerary:
Day 1 – Friday
Meet at Selina Secret Garden Lisbon for 3pm to meet and greet with the guides and your new crew of legends ready to hit the road. Shortly after, you will all depart together up the coast to the awesome Selina Peniche. Once you’ve pulled up and checked in, soak up the beautiful sunset at Cabo Carvoeiro and then feast on a traditional Portuguese dinner.
Time for some shut eye – because tomorrow, it all kicks off!
Day 2 – Saturday
Wake up and have a tasty breaky before your first surf lesson in Peniche. The beach is within walking distance, but we can also provide transport if necessary. On the way back from the surf grab, some lunch and snacks for a picnic at a top secret Peniche beach location!
Around 2pm you will head off to the iconic surf location of Nazaré where (if Neptune is smiling down on us), you’ll get the opportunity to witness the shear ferocity and might of its world-famous monster waves. After you’ve grabbed some Insta-worthy imagery of that spectacle, we then visit the Nazaré Surfer Wall Museum and walk along Praia do Norte, where, if we’re lucky, you’ll get the chance to see some of the local chargers take on the killer waves below!
Once back at Selina Peniche, we grab a much earned dinner at Cartel71, Taqueria & Tequila Bar which we wash down nicely with a few Superbocks at the Selina Peniche bar.
Day 3 – Sunday
After another tasty breaky and a quick check out, we head to Peniche for your last surf session. After getting salty, it’s time for a group review of the photographer’s pics from the weekend. Whilst you’re selecting your next Insta shots, pop into Pingo Doce to score some lunch, before hitting the road to the World Surf Reserve, Ericeira. There, we get a chance to walk along the Ribeira D’Ilhas sightseeing point and drop into the local surf shop to snap up some mementos, or if you still have enough energy, hire a board and go shred some pavement!
The time has now come for the weekend wrap up and then we hit the road back to the City. You will arrive at Selina Lisbon around 6.00pm, and it’s time to go our separate ways……or, you could join our 6 day trip heading South today instead!
With a boom of surfers arriving in the mid 80’s, Peniche, once a famed fishing port is now Portugal’s newly-established surf capital. Right at the center of the action, Selina Peniche features a shared kitchen, cowork space, library, cinema room, pergola garden, Mediterranean restaurant, bar, and rooftop terrace designed for daily yoga, weekly workshops, and live music events.
After squeezing in some morning surf, paddle over to Baleal beach’s first shop, the Pitau Shop- still proudly run by local surf legends! Join an outdoor adventure with one of our expert guides, dive into mouth-watering local delicacies, paintings, and handwoven fabrics at the local market, follow jagged cliff trails towards Cabo Carvoeiro’s lighthouse, or climb the Sao Joao Baptista fortress before sunset!
